Welcome to Textile Studies 8! Over the next 21 days you will learn all the skills necessary to be able to successfully create a pair of shorts. Each lesson will build on what you learned the lesson before. Check in here if you have been away to learn about what you missed or if you forgot about the lesson or the homework or what we will be doing next class.
Lesson 1: Wed. Jan. 22, 2014
Our first day together to learn about the course, room, and each other. We went over the course outline, expectations, and course project. You choose who you will sit with and we were able to create our seating plan. You also all learned your machine number and labelled your orange drawer. At your tables you talked about safety in the classroom and worked on a safety worksheet (block 5 will do this next day). A great first day and I enjoyed meeting all of you :). Next class we will review safety and go over the name and function of many parts of the sewing machine machine. Homework - have your parents look over the course outline, have the learning contract read and signed by you and your parents, decide on your final project and hand in bottom of blue sheet indicating your decision along with $ if that applies Due on or before Jan. 28, 2014. IF YOU ARE CURIOUS LIKE ME YOU MAY WANT TO READ AHEAD TO FIND OUT WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE COMING DAYS. . . Lesson 20: Tue. Nov. 5, 2013 - Last Textile Studies class! Write final test. Finish sewing all projects. Complete evaluation form for shorts and hand in what you have accomplished to date. Clean out drawer, remove name tag, hand in thread and bobbins, tidy room. Reminder: This is our final day in room 218. See you in room 214 next day - the foods room! Homework: bring a binder with a small amount of lined paper, pen, pencil, eraser, and highlighter. Lesson 19: Fri. Nov. 1, 2013 Goal today: Finish shorts - Sew on button, sew hems, complete evaluation form and hand in project. Homework: Final test next class: Nov. 5th Lesson 18: Wed. Oct. 30, 2013 Goal today: Review for final test (10 min). Hand sew button to centre front of shorts if not already done. Finish sewing hems. Complete evaluation form and hand in project. Project is due next class. Begin pencil case or other small project. Homework: Final test on Tue. Nov. 5th. Lesson 17: Mon. Oct. 28, 2013 Goal today: If finished waist casing hand sew a button to centre front. Finish waist casing if not done (past due). Work on hems: measure, pin, and press x2 on each hem. Begin to sew around each hem once. Lesson 16: Wed. Oct. 23, 2013 Goal today: Insert elastic and check fit if sewing a full sized pair of shorts. Secure elastic to itself; sew opening in casing neatly closed; stitch in the ditch of the two side seams. Begin measuring, pinning, pressing of the hems. This is the same technique you used when you created the waist casing. You are almost done - just the hems and a button to sew on to go! Lesson 15: Mon. Oct. 21 , 2013 Goal today: Finish measuring and pressing the waist casing. Sew around casing twice using the inside metal edges of the presser foot. Some of you began inserting the elastic in the casing. Lesson 14: Thur. Oct. 17, 2013 Goal today: Sew a standard seam allowance along the side and inside leg seams. Finish stitch along the edge of all three seam allowances and press each seam allowance towards the back. This is the last time you do any zigzaging on this project! Many of you achieved this goal and some even began measuring the waist casing. Way to sew! Lesson 13: Tue. Oct. 15, 2013 Goal today: to finish pinning the side and inside leg seams and be ready to sew the seams next class. If you weren't at this stage by the end of class you were invited to come in on GOAL day on Wed. Oct. 16 to get caught up. Some of you began to sew the side and inside leg seams. Remember to sew with the back side facing towards you. Lesson 12: Thur. Oct. 10, 2013 Complete sewing the centre front and back seams and finished the edges of the seam allowances. You pressed both seam allowances to the left and label the back piece below notch towards the curve. Some of you began to pin the side and inside leg seams. Lesson 11: Tue. Oct. 8, 2013 Finish cutting out patterns. Demo on winding bobbins. Some of you pined the centre back and front seams and began to sew the seams. Lesson 10: Fri. Oct. 4, 2013 Today some of you had to quickly finish up the tracing of your pattern pieces. You worked with those at your table to correctly label a cut piece of fabric based on the words of the day. You watched a quick demo on how to pin the pattern correctly to your fabric being careful to line up the grain line arrow with the selvages of your fabric. You worked quickly in partners to pin the pattern pieces of each partner to their fabric, get in checked by the teacher and then cut it all out. Most of you accomplished this today. Well done. Homework: none Lesson 9: Wed. Oct. 2, 2013 Today we went over the intro quiz. Most of you did very well on this quiz, well done! Your seam samples are now past due and some of you still needed to work on this and hand in by end of class. Lesson for today: pattern sizes; how to take your own measurements to determine which size you will sew. Once this was done you worked in partners to trace out your pattern pieces (1 front and 1 back) for your final project. All pieces were labelled and roughly cut out near the cutting line. Each of you need your own set traced out accurately. Homework: none Lesson 8: Mon. Sept. 30, 2013 Today class started with a demo of the seam sample (pattern creation, pin, cut-out and sew). There are samples on the wall of each major step. Check these out if you missed all or part of the lesson. By end of class the straight and zigzag stitching should be complete and the pressing is all that is left to do at the start of next class. Demonstrations on how to safely and properly use the iron were given. The sample is due by the first 15 minutes of class on Wed. Oct. 2. The fabric for your final project was given out today. We went over the mark sheet for the final project and placed these in the marking binder for our block in numerical order by machine number. Homework: fabric, elastic, thread for final project if you are providing from home. Lesson 7: Thur. Sept. 26, 2013 Today you wrote the intro quiz. Worked on threading machine and sewing samples of standard seam allowance and zigzag finish. Half the class watched a demo on tracing out the pattern for the seam sample and then made their own pattern. Homework: Sample sewn in class is due by 1/2 way through class on Wed. Oct. 2nd. Lesson 6: Tue. September 24, 2013 We reviewed for the quiz next class and went over the worksheets we have done so far this term. You watched demo's on how to thread the sewing machine and then you worked on threading and sewing straight seams, zig zag stitching along the edge of fabric and backstitching. Homework: supplies for sewing project if you are bringing these from home by Monday Sept. 30th. Intro quiz next class Thur. Sept. 26th. Lesson 5: Thur. September 19, 2013 Today a group exercise on Equipment started us off. You worked in you table groups to label and define 12 pieces of equipment commonly used in a sewing environment and filled in the worksheet on Sewing Equipment. Once finished those who had not finished their paper samples finished those up. A few began to learn how to thread the machine and then worked on this in partners or on your own. Well done today! Homework: Have a great weekend. Intro quiz on Thursday Sept. 26th - review all class worksheets on safety, machine parts and function and equipment names and functions. Purchase fabric and bring to school if that applies to you. Lesson 4: Fri. September 13, 2013 Today you labelled your drawer with you name corresponding to your sewing machine number. Homework was handed in: x-word and getting to know me sheet. Contracts and 1/2 slip off bottom of letter home was handed in along with $ if that applied to you. We then continued our sewing practice on paper. Most of you worked through the Gaining Control worksheet and then moved onto the Machine Practice 1,2,3. Once these were all done you stapled all the papers together and handed them into the inbox. Those who were done helped others. Homework to be done for next class: Have a great weekend! See you after the grade 8 retreat. Lesson 3: Wed. September 11, 2013 Today the 3rd word of the day started us off. Homework was checked and you worked individually on the sewing machine cross word puzzle (the parts of the machine worksheet is a good reference for this). You also worked on a getting to know me worksheet and handed this in if you hadn't done so already. There were demonstrations on how to operate the sewing machine safely. After all the demos were complete we had nearly 30 min to practice sewing on paper guiding the presser foot along the lines you drew on the paper. Once this was mastered you began working on the Gaining Control Worksheet. The class just flew by and too soon it was time to clean-up. Homework to be handed in by Friday September 13th (next class): contract read and signed by you and your parents, decide on your final project and hand in bottom of the letter home indicating your decision along with $ if that applies. Finish the sewing machine crossword puzzle and the getting to know me sheet. Both to be handed in next class. Lesson 2: Mon. Sept. 9, 2013 Today we learned more of the routines of the classroom and reviewed our safety worksheet. While coping down the first 2 words of the day and the names of the parts of the sewing machine many of you brought up your homework to be checked. Sewing machines and project drawer were assigned. We looked over the parts of the sewing machine and began to learn their function. Once that was all done we worked in pairs and learned how to operate the sewing machine safely; without power today! Next class: we will plug in the machines and each of you will practice sewing on paper to get the feel of the machine. Homework to be handed in by Sept. 13 or earlier: contract read and signed by you and your parents, decide on your final project and hand in bottom of blue sheet indicating your decision along with $ if that applies. |
